AKP Sports Foundation to Host 2026 Back2School Festival and Invitational in Los Angeles
Free community festival at Nickerson Gardens Recreation Center will provide school supplies, youth activities, mentorship and a competitive basketball invitational benefiting local students
LOS ANGELES, Calif. — August 5, 2026 — AKP Sports Foundation will host its annual Back2School Festival and Basketball Invitational on Saturday, August 8, 2026, at Nickerson Gardens Recreation Center, 11251 Compton Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90059.
The Back2School Festival will take place from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and will bring together children, families, athletes, volunteers and community partners for a day of games, activities, school-supply distribution and community engagement as students prepare for the upcoming academic year.
The festival reflects AKP Sports Foundation’s commitment to uplifting and empowering young people through sports, education and mentorship. Through Back2School, participating children and families will have access to school supplies and backpacks while also engaging in activities designed to build confidence, connection and excitement for the school year ahead.
“At AKP, we believe our Festival event can be a powerful platform for investing in young people and strengthening communities,” said John Lee, CEO and President of AKP Sports Foundation. “Back2School Festival is about making sure children begin the school year knowing that their community believes in them, supports them and wants to see them succeed. Every backpack, every interaction and every game is part of that larger mission.”
In conjunction with the community festival, AKP Sports Foundation will also host its Back2School Basketball Invitational, bringing together church basketball teams for a competitive tournament in support of the initiative.
Teams will check in beginning at 8:30 a.m., with competition beginning at 9:00 a.m. The invitational will continue throughout the day, concluding with a trophy ceremony at approximately 5:30 p.m.
Participating teams contribute a $500 tournament fee, with proceeds supporting Back2School school supplies and resources for children served through the initiative. Each team’s participation therefore extends beyond competition on the court and directly contributes to AKP’s community impact.
The Invitational will also include an AKP Cares portion at 10:40 a.m., reinforcing the connection between athletics and service that defines AKP programming.
“Community is only one part of what we are building,” CEO, John Lee said. “When these teams step onto the court, they are also helping put real school supplies into the hands of children. We want every athlete and every team to understand that they have an opportunity to use sports to serve something bigger than themselves.”
The Back2School Festival is open to families and community members. Street parking is available on surrounding streets, and attendees are encouraged to observe all posted parking restrictions and secure valuables inside their vehicles.
AKP Sports Foundation is a national nonprofit organization committed to using sports, education, mentorship and service to create opportunities for young people and strengthen communities. Through sports academies, tournaments, youth-development initiatives, mentorship programs and community-service events, AKP seeks to invest in the next generation both on and off the court and field.
Community members, businesses and organizations interested in supporting the Back2School initiative are also invited to partner with AKP Sports Foundation. Donations will support school supplies, programming and other resources connected to AKP’s community initiatives.
